ASO Glossary

Organic vs. Paid Installs

Organic installs come from users who found an app through unpaid search or browse; paid installs come from Apple Search Ads or other ad campaigns — the distinction matters for measuring ASO's real impact separately from ad spend.

App Store Connect and Apple Search Ads reporting both surface install counts, but attributing an install correctly to organic discovery versus a paid campaign matters for knowing whether a metadata change or an ad budget is actually driving growth.

The halo effect complicates a clean split: some installs counted as organic were made more likely by a concurrent paid campaign's ranking lift, so the two channels aren't fully independent even when they're measured separately. Treat the organic number as influenced by, not isolated from, recent ad activity.

For ASO measurement specifically, watching organic installs for a keyword change after a metadata update, with no concurrent paid campaign on that term, gives the cleanest read on whether the metadata change itself worked.

Frequently asked questions

Can I fully separate organic results from paid halo effects?
Not perfectly. The cleanest test is pausing paid spend on a keyword for a period and watching whether organic installs for that term hold steady, which is close to the method the academic research on the halo effect itself used.
