Download Velocity

Download velocity is the rate of installs an app receives over a short window, treated by Apple's ranking algorithm as a multiplier alongside metadata relevance, conversion, and retention.

A sudden increase in installs for a given keyword, whether from organic growth, press coverage, or paid Apple Search Ads, signals to the algorithm that the app is satisfying real demand for that search. This is the mechanism most commonly cited behind burst campaigns and the paid-to-organic halo effect.

Velocity matters more than absolute volume in the short term. An app going from 10 to 200 daily installs for a keyword shows a stronger velocity signal than an app holding steady at 5,000, even though the second app has far more total installs.

Velocity gains from a short paid push tend to fade if the underlying engagement (conversion, retention) doesn't hold up once the spend stops. It's a multiplier on the other ranking factors, not a substitute for them.

Frequently asked questions

Can download velocity alone push a keyword to the top of search results?
For a short time, on moderate-difficulty terms, yes. Sustained top ranking still depends on conversion and retention holding up once the velocity spike passes.
Does velocity reset after a campaign ends?
The install rate itself drops back to baseline, but any ranking gained during the spike can persist if the engagement signals from those installs (retention, ratings) support it. If they don't, ranking tends to drift back down.
