Burst Campaigns
A burst campaign is a short, high-intensity user acquisition push designed to generate enough installs in a brief window to boost an app's ranking for target keywords, leveraging the ranking algorithm's sensitivity to install velocity.
The App Store ranking algorithm is sensitive to install velocity — a rapid influx of installs for a keyword signals to Apple that the app is satisfying that search intent, which can temporarily or permanently boost ranking. Burst campaigns exploit this by concentrating paid installs in a short window.
Burst campaigns are typically run via Apple Search Ads or third-party ad networks targeting the keywords you want to rank for organically. The theory is that paid installs generate organic ranking lift that outlasts the campaign spend.
The effectiveness of burst campaigns depends on the keyword's difficulty, the quality of installs (low-quality installs that don't engage don't generate the engagement signals that sustain ranking), and the app's baseline authority. For high-difficulty keywords, a single burst campaign rarely produces lasting organic lift.
Frequently asked questions
- Are burst campaigns worth the cost?
- For very competitive keywords, the cost to maintain a top-3 ranking via burst campaigns can exceed the value of the organic installs generated. For moderate-difficulty keywords where a small push can establish a durable ranking, the economics are often favorable. The calculation depends on the lifetime value of an organic install from that keyword.
