Product Page Optimization (PPO)
Product Page Optimization is Apple's native App Store Connect A/B testing tool, letting you run up to three alternate treatments of your icon, screenshots, and preview video against your default page for up to 90 days.
Each PPO treatment starts as a full copy of your live product page. You can change only the icon, screenshots, and app preview videos in a treatment — text fields like the title, subtitle, and description aren't part of the test. Traffic from every source (organic search, paid, browse, referrals) is split between your default page and the treatments you're running.
Apple's analytics apply Bayesian statistical methods built for this specific kind of test, and a treatment is labeled as performing better or worse once it reaches 90 percent confidence against the baseline. A test can run for up to 90 days, though clear results on a reasonably trafficked app often arrive well before that.
PPO is the conversion half of ASO, not the discoverability half. It tells you which creative gets more of the users who already see your app to tap install; it says nothing about which keywords bring those users to the page in the first place. Keyword research and PPO are complementary, not substitutes for each other.
Frequently asked questions
- Can I test my title or subtitle with Product Page Optimization?
- No. PPO treatments are limited to the icon, screenshots, and app preview video. Testing metadata text means changing it live and comparing App Store Connect analytics before and after, since there's no built-in split test for those fields.
- How is PPO different from Custom Product Pages?
- PPO splits your existing organic and paid traffic to test creative variants against each other. Custom Product Pages are separate, purpose-built pages you link to from specific campaigns or channels — they aren't eligible for PPO testing themselves.
