ASO A/B Testing
ASO A/B testing (also called product page optimization) is the practice of testing alternative versions of app store creative elements — icons, screenshots, descriptions — to improve conversion from search impression to install.
Apple's Product Page Optimization feature (available in App Store Connect) allows developers to test up to three alternative versions of their icon, screenshots, and preview video against the default. Apple splits traffic and reports conversion results, letting you identify which creative performs better.
A/B testing addresses the conversion half of ASO (getting users who see your app to install it), separate from the discoverability half (getting the app to appear in search results). Keyword research drives discoverability; product page optimization drives conversion.
What to test: the app icon (the highest-impact creative element for impression-to-tap rate), the first one or two screenshots (visible in search results without tapping through), and the preview video (autoplay in results for some placements). Testing one element at a time gives cleaner signal.
Frequently asked questions
- Does A/B testing metadata fields (name, keywords) work the same way?
- No. Apple's Product Page Optimization only covers creative assets (icon, screenshots, video). Metadata field changes (name, subtitle, keyword field) are live tests — you change them and watch ranking and conversion metrics in App Store Connect analytics. There's no built-in split test for metadata.
