Screenshot Caption Indexing

Since June 2025, Apple has used OCR to read the text overlaid on App Store screenshots and treats that caption text as an additional ranking signal, distinct from the metadata fields developers fill in directly.

Most screenshots carry a short caption or headline layered over the UI, written to sell the feature shown ('Track habits in 30 seconds', 'Plan your budget in one tap'). Apple's OCR indexing means the words in those captions can now contribute to keyword relevance, not just to the human reader deciding whether to tap.

This adds a fourth practical surface to metadata strategy, after name, subtitle, and keyword field. It does not replace them — captions are unlikely to carry the ranking weight of the title or subtitle — but it means screenshot text is no longer purely a conversion decision. A caption that includes a real target keyword phrase, written naturally rather than stuffed, gets a small amount of extra relevance credit for free.

This is a comparatively recent change, and the exact weight Apple assigns to caption text isn't publicly documented. Treat it as a secondary signal worth aligning with your keyword strategy, not a field to prioritize over the name, subtitle, and keyword field.

Frequently asked questions

Should I rewrite my screenshot captions purely for keywords?
No. Captions still have to sell the feature to a human deciding whether to install. Write for conversion first, and where a real target keyword fits naturally into that copy, use it — don't sacrifice a clear pitch for keyword density in a caption.
Does this apply to the preview video too?
The reporting on OCR indexing has focused on static screenshot captions. Text that appears briefly in a preview video is a less established signal, and shouldn't be assumed to carry the same weight.
