Keyword Seasonality

Keyword seasonality describes the predictable rise and fall of search demand for certain App Store keywords based on time of year, events, or cyclical patterns.

Some app categories are inherently seasonal: tax preparation apps spike in Q1, gift trackers spike in November-December, fitness apps surge in January. Popularity scores for seasonal keywords will be higher during peak periods and lower during off-peak times.

For ASO purposes, seasonality means the optimal time to update metadata targeting seasonal keywords is before the peak, not during it. Metadata changes take a few days to index and rankings take time to establish — updating in mid-January for a tax app means missing most of the spike.

Not all seasonal patterns are annual. Academic calendars create term-time and vacation patterns for study apps. Major events (sporting seasons, product launches) create temporary demand spikes. Monitoring popularity scores regularly helps catch these patterns.

Frequently asked questions

How do I prepare for seasonal keyword demand?
Identify the seasonal terms relevant to your category and note when their popularity peaks. Update your metadata (including those terms or giving them more prominent placement) 2-3 weeks before the peak, accounting for indexing time and ranking ramp-up.
